Mar 14 Assignment
rx. Sample syllabus for mobile
- Next week, we will crit your layouts. After that, you are welcome to use the subsequent week to make final changes you might want to make. If you are wondering how you can improve your layout for next week:
- 1/ Email me and Bo if you want feedback on anything specific.
- 2/ Take a look at the screengrabs from Mimi's instagram story she posted for 3/14. How might these compositions inspire you to explore formal concepts like size constrast, modulation, undulation, form/counterform, color palette, sequencing, continuity/surprise, harmony, rhythm. Incorporate it into your layout.
- 3/ Watch the javascript tutorial I gave on 3/14, which very lightly covers some basics (and is saved in the shared folder). Incorporate this in some way into your layout. (The template files you can pick up code from are also in the shared google doc, or right here).
- Your HTML and CSS web files should be saved in a project folder. Label the project folder as your first name (ex: dylan – one word, all lowercase). Label the html file exactly like so: index.html.
- Upload the folder to our shared google drive folder by 7:00AM next Tuesday.
ux. smart screen
Let's move on to the next big project for the semester. I'll explain this project more next week. For now, I am assigning you a prompt due next week.
Think of all the versatile things you can do with paper.
- Carry it in your bag
- Hang it on the wall, large or small
- Stick it like a Post-it on your desk, on your laptop, fridge
- Fold it, put it in your pocket
- Wrap objects in it
- Crumble it, throw it, uncrumble it
- Cut it into strips
- Use it as tape (like blue tape)
- Cut it into any shape you want, say a strip, then add velcro, and make it a bracelet.
- Bind many sheets together, or post them on the wall in a grid, or as cards you can re-arrange on a table.
- etc!
What if every piece of paper had the same capability as your phone?
- tells time
- knows its location
- knows how fast its moving
- responds to touch
- responds to the angle it is being held at
- identifies sounds
- plays music
- plays motions graphics
- connects to the internet
- etc!
Densely fill five 11x17 sheets of paper (or the equivalent, but no skimping) with concept sketches that explore all the things you could make with a piece of paper if a piece of paper were as "smart" as your phone. (For example, a paper bracelet with ping notifications from friends that appears along the paper strap band. OR Post-It notes that you could change the color of simply by writing down the name of the color. OR a NIKE shoe box which, after removing the shoes, displays a message about how to recycle the box.)
Put a good 3 hours into this, and bring your sheets in to class next week.
co. Breaking News “Pen pals”
On 5.5" x 8.5" cardstock, draft a followup letter to your penpal. Remember to follow the schedule of deliverables, outlined under Projects on the syllabus homepage.
